Fruits can be left uneaten for a few days, either stored at room temperature or in the refrigerator, to develop maximum flavor and sweetness. The exterior of the fruit is tough with a thick layer of pith surrounding the interior pulp, and the entire rind should be discarded after extracting the pulp and seeds.

Passion fruit has a short shelf life of about one week, so be prepared to use them as soon as possible, either by eating fresh, preparing in a recipe, or scooping out the pulp and preserving it.

Pulp can be eaten directly from the fruit, seeds and all, or it can be strained and used in sauces and drinks. Find a recipe for a delectable non-alcoholic passion fruit mocktail on our sister site, Fooda l. The pulp can be processed into jelly, or pressure canned in a method similar to what would be used to make lemon curd.

Pulp can also be scooped out and frozen in an airtight container or zip-top bag for up to three months. As a result, she began self-teaching to learn how to grow food, which led to a passion for providing for others in need. Currently, Kelly is coordinating a plan to produce a tropical homestead in south Florida that will provide homegrown food to families in need, and teach them to grow their own. She is working her way toward certification as a master gardener, and building a lifelong love of nature with her kids.

All other parts of the Passiflora plants are potentially harmful and should not be eaten. Although Passiflora is a self-clinging tendril climber, it benefits from fan-training, which produces a more attractive plant than if left alone to scramble.

After planting, cut back growing tips of all shoots to encourage branching from the base. For a step-by-step guide to fan training against a wall or fence, see our page on training and pruning climbers on first planting. Tie main framework shoots in along the horizontal to allow flowering shoots to hang down.

Once established prune in spring to shorten overlong shoots and remove any frost damage. Just after flowering, shorten trailing flowered sideshoots to a couple of buds from the main fan framework. Repeat annually. If your passion flower is overgrown or badly frost-damaged, carry out renovation pruning in spring by cutting back the stems to cm ft from soil level.

Cut to a bud or side shoot wherever possible. The plant will respond by sending out lots of new green shoots. These will need thinning out and formative training. Most of the time it grows on vines, especially if you get the ornamental type. These beautiful plants are native to Mexico, Central and South America, but can be found all over the American continent nowadays.

They grow best in very warm, tropical climates and need plenty of sunshine and water. They also need the best draining soil you have, one that clings to a bit more water than an orchid soil. First, look at the fruit. It should be uniformly colored, and possibly a little bit wrinkly. A perfectly smooth fruit may still be a bit underripe. Then tug the fruit a little. And finally, look to see there is no green tinge left on the fruit itself. This means the fruit is ripening, and is safe to pick, even now.

I was wondering if the fruit is edible and if so, when do you know when it is ready to eat? Your response would be greatly appreciated. The most common type of passion flower that bears edible fruit is Passiflora edulis. It has a white and purple bloom and the mature fruits are dark purple and egg shaped.
