We ran out of cash fast. Planning ahead better would have made a much less stressful visit. We also ran into trouble on our last visit to Venezuela a few years ago. The rate for getting money from an ATM is the official rate. We changed the cash we had in illegal casinos long story, but good option and then ended up having to travel to Colombia over the border to take out Colombian pesos and change THOSE unofficially into Venezuelan bolivars. What a mess. Man what added stress. We let a chick from England borrow some money from us too in Cuba and were thankful of two girls we met in Playa Larga who were will helping us out in our time of need.

Under Obama, the US famously thawed its once-frosty relationship with its embargoed neighbour. Now, Cuba is more accessible than it has been for many decades, and those who decide to holiday there can expect a mixture of colourful city life and luxurious beaches. Importantly, having travel insurance is a legal requirement for entry into Cuba, and you are expected to present confirmation that you have it upon entry. You can only convert your money to the CUC which is the currency used by tourists within Cuba, either at the airport or in some hotels.
Its a good idea to change money at a reputable Bureau de Change. You may also get a better exchange rate for British pounds or euros than you would for US dollars. When you leave Cuba, you can get any remaining CUC exchanged back into pounds, however the rate may not be favourable and you may be better off spending it before you go to the airport.
Travel insurance with medical cover is a requirement for visitors to Cuba. Depending on where you are in the country, medical facilities may be more difficult to get to, and if you need medical evacuation costs could run into the thousands of pounds. Hospitals are more numerous nearer to Havana, but there are medical centres throughout the country.
Try to find out where your nearest one is so that you are prepared. Also contact the insurer as soon as possible if you require any emergency medical assistance. Cookies on GOV.
